Manchester United continued their fine showing on their pre-season tour as Erik Ten Hag’s side hammered Crystal Palace 3-1 in Melbourne on Tuesday, July 19. United put on a clinical show in front of a 76,499-strong crowd at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.
It was a confidence-boosting win in the pre-season for Manchester United against Crystal Palace, who had beaten the Red Devils 1-0 on the final matchday of last season.
Erik Ten Hag will be happy with the side’s showing as United have been in fine form in the pre-season, hammering Liverpool 4-0, Melbourne Victory 4-1 before their 3-1 win over Palace on Tuesday. Anthony Martial’s form will be a big plus for United as the France striker netted his 3rd goal in as many games in the pre-season after returning from his loan spell in Sevilla.
Martial netted his first goal in the 17th minute for Manchester United and played a key role in the second and third goals scored by Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, respectively. Palace pulled one back late on when Joel Ward headed one into the nets in the 74th minute.
United played the last few minutes with 10 men after 19-year-old substitute defender Will Fish, drafted late onto the tour, was given a red card for dragging down Victor Akinwale just outside the penalty area.
MARTIAL IMPRESSES AGAIN
With Cristiano Ronaldo excused from the tour due to a family issue, Martial has been United’s main threat up front, partnering well with Sancho and Rashford.
Notably, manager Ten Hag had talked up the prospect of Martial having a central role to play at United in the upcoming season after his showing against Melbourne Victory.
“I’m sure he (Anthony Martial) can come back and even better. I think when he has the right focus and the right motivation and he works hard he will have production because he is a good player,” Ten Hag had said.
United, who finished sixth in the Premier League last season and failed to qualify for the Champions League, wrap up their Australian tour with a friendly against Aston Villa in Perth on Saturday.
