Formula One has issued an update on Alfa Romeo’s Zhou Guanyu after the Chinese driver suffered a horrific crash on Sunday during the British Grand Prix.

The incident took place during the early moments of the race as Pierre Gasly nudged into George Russell’s Mercedes. This caused the British driver to lose control and ram into Guanyu’s Alfa Romeo, which caused the car to flip and slide into the barriers. The red flag immediately came out and the race was halted. There were atleast six racers involved in the accident.

The FIA had released a statement saying that Alex Albon and Guanyu had been taken to the medical centre and both men were conscious.

“The FIA advises that following the incident at the start of the race, emergency crews were immediately in attendance, and the drivers of Car 23 (Albon) and Car 24 (Zhou) have been taken to the medical centre.

“Both drivers were conscious and will be evaluated at the medical centre. Further updates will be given in due course,” said the FIA in the statement.

Now, F1 has tweeted that the Alfa Romeo driver has been declared fit and released from the medical centre.

“Update: Zhou Guanyu has been declared fit and released from the Medical Centre,” said F1.

The Halo safety device fitted on the F1 car proved to be the saviour for Guanyu as he was able to escape from the incident without suffering any major injury.

The safety device was introduced into the sport in 2016 in order to shield the drivers from debris flying around the track or when the car goes upside down.

After the incident with Guanyu, many fans thanked the safety device protecting the Chinese driver from sustaining serious injury. The British GP ended with Carlos Sainz taking the chequered flag and Perez and Hamilton finished second and third respectively.
