Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo has asked Manchester United to leave the club if they receive a suitable offer this window as he wishes to play Champions League football for the remainder of his career. United’s failure to reach the Champions League has put a big question mark over Ronaldo’s current stint at the club.

Ronaldo completed a sensational return to Old Trafford ahead of the 2021/22 season, having spent three years in Italy with Juventus. Ronaldo shone in his first season on the comeback with Manchester United, but the Premier League club came up with a trophy-less season.

Ronaldo scored 24 goals in all competitions and was a rare bright spark in an otherwise disappointing season for United, who failed to qualify for the Champions League after finishing sixth in the Premier League.

United also failed to qualify for the Champions League, which was one of Ronaldo’s primary motives when he made the switch from Juventus to Manchester. A host of clubs will surely be put on high alert after this latest development.

Last month, Ronaldo maintained that he was content in Manchester. He wanted to play an important role under Erik Ten Hag, who arrived in Manchester after three seasons at Ajax.

“I was happy to be back in a club that really raised my career so it was unbelievable, the feeling when I came back again,” Ronaldo said. “I was and still am very happy to be here.

“The most important thing for me is to try to win the games and try to win some championship… but I believe that Manchester will be back where they belong. Sometimes it takes time, but I still believe.”
