India captain Rohit Sharma heaped rich praise on Ravindra Jadeja, saying the all-rounder looked calm and composed under pressure during his match-winning knock of 46 not out in the 2nd T20I against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham on Saturday, July 9.
Rohit Sharma said he is happy to see Jadeja brimming with confidence after the Birmingham Test in which the India all-rounder hit a hundred in the first innings.
Jadeja’s unbeaten 46 helped India post 170 on the board on a difficult pitch in Birmingham after they were reeling at 122 for 6 in the 16th over. India’s top-order batters continued their aggressive approach as the visitors kept the scoreboard moving quickly but wickets also fell in quick succession.
However, Jadeja made sure India pushed the total to a competitive range by batting with so much composure with the lower-order batters. The all-rounder hit only 5 boundaries but he scored at over 150.
“Brilliant knock under pressure [from Jadeja] and Jadeja with his experience of the hundred in this ground was calm and collective. At no point did we were feeling he was panicking. Was good to finish on a score we thought was par on that surface,” Rohit said after India sealed a 49-run win.
POWERPLAY SUCCESS FOR INDIA
Furthermore, Rohit also highlighted that India have been keen on winning both the powerplays (with bat and ball) and he was glad that it came off well on Saturday.
While Rohit and Pant dominated with the bat, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who was declared the Player of the Match, shone with the new ball again, picking up the big wickets of Jos Buttler and Jason Roy. Bhuvneshwar finished with figures of 3/15 while Jasprit Bumrah, who got Liam Livingstone, finished with figures of 2/10.
“We do understand the importance of the powerplay, whether we bat or bowl. Our powerplay in both games was superb and want to give guys confidence to continue,” he added.
“We were clear what we wanted to do. When you win games, it’s always nice. The group is also confident, which is very important.”
