HIGHLIGHTS

  • England lost to India by 49 runs in the 2nd T20I
  • England were shot out for 121 in their run chase
  • The third T20I will take place on Sunday

Jos Buttler was highly dejected after England lost to India by 49 runs in the second T20I at Edgbaston in Birmingham. On Saturday, July 9, the Men in Blue backed up their 50-run victory at the Rose Bowl with another strong showing, thereby taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

After being asked to chase down 171, England lost wickets at regular intervals and were bundled out for 121 in 17 overs. Barring Moeen Ali and David Willey, who both scored in the 30s, none of the batters from the home team could put in much of a fight.

“Very disappointing. I don’t think we played well enough to consider batting first as an option,” Buttler was quoted as saying after the match.

Buttler, however, heaped praise on fast bowler Richard Gleeson for making an incredible debut. Gleeson finished with figures of 4-1-15-3, getting India’s top 3, including Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, and Virat Kohli.

Buttler also lauded Chris Jordan for being England’s standout bowler in the T20I series thus far. After he became the country’s leading wicket-taker in Southampton, Jordan picked up a four-wicket haul in the second game.

“[On Gleeson] Fantastic debut given the guys he got out, although a disappointing result. CJ always bowls the tough overs and is naturally under pressure a lot of the time. Gets the result most of the time, delighted for him,” he added.

The third and final T20I of the series will take place on Sunday, July 10 at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. Rohit Sharma, in the meantime, won his 14th match on the trot as the Indian T20I skipper.
