Former batter Virender Sehwag heaped praise on Joe Root, saying that the England cricketer is currently the best batter in Test cricket at the present point in time. On Tuesday, July 5, Root scored his 28th Test century during the rescheduled fifth Test against India at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

Root got to his milestone off 136 balls and also shared a double-century partnership with the swashbuckling Jonny Bairstow, who is currently the leading run-scorer in Test cricket in the ongoing year. Root is currently second in the list of leading run-scorers this year after Bairstow.

With England chasing 378 to win the Birmingham Test, Root came to bat at No.4 after Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope perished in quick succession. From there on, Root didn’t look back and got his half-century off a mere 71 balls.

He didn’t throw his wicket away and stayed not out at Stumps on the fourth day of the Test match. On Day five, the former Three Lions’ skipper got to his century with a boundary off fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, who has been a tad on the expensive side.

After he got to the century, Sehwag, who is the only Indian with two triple-centuries in Test cricket, lauded Root for playing another knock of substance under extreme pressure.

Sehwag, who is popularly known as the Nawab of Najafgarh, took to Twitter and wrote, “4th Test hundred of the series for this amazing run machine, Joe Root. The best test batsman in the world right now.”

Root has been in spectacular form in the last couple of years and has arguably been the standout batter for the Brits in the purest format of the game.
