HIGHLIGHTS

  • Ben Stokes played his last ODI match against South Africa on July 19
  • England lost the 1st ODI match to South Africa by 62 runs
  • Rassie van der Dussen scored a brilliant century in the 1st ODI

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has credited star all-rounder Ben Stokes for the Three Lions’ victory at the 2019 ODI World Cup. England lifted their maiden ICC trophy in the 50-over format at Lord’s.

Vaughan added that the Eoin Morgan-led England were able to win because everyone contributed to the team ethos for four years.

“England won the WC because for 4 years they all contributed hugely to the team ethos .. But let’s be honest it was @benstokes38 heroics that got them over the line in the final .. Sad at 31 to be retiring but what a legend .. #Stokes,” Vaughan tweeted.

Morgan announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect, while Stokes ended his ODI career. The star all-rounder’s last 50-over match was the first ODI against South Africa at Chester-le-Street. Stokes remained wicketless in the five overs that he bowled as South Africa posted 333/5, courtesy of Rassie van der Dussen’s brilliant knock of 134 and Aiden Markram’s 77.

In reply, England were bundled out for 271 as Markram took a four-wicket haul. Ben Stokes scored 5 runs in his last ODI match. England and South Africa will play the 2nd ODI match on July 22 in Manchester.

Since the full-time appointment of Jos Buttler as England white-ball captain, the side has lost both T20Is and ODI series against India, and the first ODI match against South Africa.
