Pakistan captain Babar Azam heaped praise on Abdullah Shafique after his valiant effort saw the visitors secure the win over Sri Lanka in the first Test.

Chasing a target of 342, Shafique guided Pakistan to a four-wicket win on Wednesday. The 22-year-old scored 160 runs in 408 balls, scoring seven boundaries and one six. The opener received support from captain Azam and Mohammed Rizwan, who scored 55 and 40 respectively.

For his efforts with the bat in the second innings, Shafique was named as the Man Of The Match. Speaking at the post-match presentation, Azam said that the bowlers did well in the first innings of the match. The Pakistan captain also thanked the tailenders for supporting him during the team’s first innings as they were in a spot of bother before Azam scored his hundred. He reserved special praise for Naseem Shah for his effort with the bat in the first innings.

“First innings we did well with the ball. I should thank the tailenders for the support they gave me, especially Naseem Shah. We know how to play spin so we believed,” said Azam.

The Pakistan skipper then went on to praise the 22-year-old opener who clinched the match for the visitors. He said that he and Shafique were trying to build a partnership and the right-handed batter showed a lot of class during the match. Azam also said it was really pleasing to see him perform well.

“Me and Abdullah were just trying to build a partnership. As a youngster he is showing a lot of class. Really pleasing to see him perform well,” said Azam.

With the win, Pakistan took a 1-0 lead in the series. The second match between the two teams will start on Sunday at the same venue as the first one.
