Former Indian cricketer Pravin Amre has urged misfiring Virat Kohli to stay and control his nerves and said it is just a matter of one good innings for the star batter to return to form.
Kohli has been going through a slump in his career as the former Indian captain hasn’t scored an international hundred since 2019. The 33-year-old couldn’t make much of an impact during the rearranged Test against England earlier this month. Kohli wasn’t included in the squad for the first match in the T20I series and once again failed to impress in the remaining two games against the hosts.
He missed the first ODI on Tuesday due to a mild groin strain and his availability for the second game of the three-match series is a doubt at the moment.
With the T20 World Cup happening towards the end of the year, Kohli’s spot in the Indian squad for the shortest format of the game has come under scrutiny with former players and fans questioning his position. Amre, however, feels that the star batter needs to remain calm and control his nerves.
Speaking to Jagran TV, the former cricketer said that Kohli shouldn’t react much and spend more time on the wicket to score big runs. He also said that the 33-year-old needs to chase small targets first.
“Virat needs to stay calm. He should not react much and control his nerves. He needs to spend more time on the wicket to score big runs. It’s just a matter of one good inning for Virat. For this, he needs to chase a small target Like focus on the initial 10 runs, then make the next 10 runs, and so on,” said Amre.
Amre again stressed that the Indian star needs to remain calm as it will help him with his shot selection and there will be less chances of making mistakes.
“Remember that Virat is a chasing master. He needs to help himself and stay calm. When you stay calm, your shot selection will improve, and there will be less chance of you making a mistake. That’s why I feel Virat should chase small targets of 10 runs. That I think will help him a lot. No one has a doubt about his ability, but he needs to execute things properly by staying calm,” said Amre.
