Shikhar Dhawan has been named captain of the India ODI squad for the tour of West Indies in July. India will play three ODIs from July 22 to 27 at Port of Spain. Ravindra Jadeja has been named Shikhar Dhawan’s deputy.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been rested from the ODI side while Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer have been selected in the squad. Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan have both been named in the side.
Deepak Hooda, who smashed a sensational hundred against Ireland, has also been added to the side.
Rishabh Pant, who has been playing non-stop international cricket, since the end of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 has been rested for the series. Notably, India’s Test regulars Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami were rested from the 5-match T20I series against South Africa at home in June but Pant led the side in the absence of KL Rahul, who was ruled out with an injury after initially being named captain.
The selectors’ decision to rest the star players comes as the West Indies ODIs begins 5 days after the completion of the limited-overs series in England, which will be played from July 7 to 17. Rohit Sharma will lead the side in the white-ball series, which begins with the first T20I on Thursday, July 7.
