ukraine: Biden accuses Russia of ‘horrific atrocity’ at Ukraine rail station

NEW DELHI: Holding Russia responsible for a rocket attack on a train station in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk, United States President Joe Biden on Friday deeming the incident a “horrific atrocity”. The US embassy in Ukraine also described the missile strike on the eastern rail station as “one more atrocity” committed by Russian troops in Ukraine.
At least 50 people were killed in the strike at the station, where those seeking to flee eastern Ukraine were awaiting evacuation.
“The attack on a Ukrainian train station is yet another horrific atrocity committed by Russia, striking civilians who were trying to evacuate and reach safety,” Biden said on Twitter.
The US embassy in Ukraine tweeted: “The Russian missile attack on the Kramatorsk railway station, a hub for civilian evacuations, which left dozens of people killed and more than 100 injured, is one more atrocity committed by Russia in Ukraine. The world will hold (Russian President Vladimir) Putin to account.”
A missile had hit the station where thousands had gathered to flee Ukraine, killing at least 50, authorities said, as workers unearthed bodies from a mass grave in a town that has become the centre of war crimes allegations against Russian troops.
Photos from the station showed dead people covered with tarps and remnants of a rocket with words “for the children” painted on it in Russian. About 4,000 civilians were in and around the station at the time of strike, office of Ukraine’s prosecutor-general said, adding that most were women and children heeding calls to leave the area before Russia launches a full-scale offensive in the country’s east.
Russia, however, denied targeting civilians and its defence ministry said its forces were not behind the Kramatorsk attack.
