20th seed Amanda Anisimova, on Saturday, July 2, defeated Coco Gauff in the third round of Wimbledon 2022 and called it “the most special day of my career”. The 20-year-old star from the USA won the match 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-1 on her debut at the Centre Court.
Anisimova came back from a 0-3 trial and took the first set in the tie-break where Gauff held her nerve. From there on, Anisimova kept growing in confidence after losing only three games in the last two sets.
Even though Gauff won the first set, she looked jittery in most parts. In the final two sets, Anisimova didn’t allow her opponent much breathing space.
“It’s my first time playing on Centre Court. It’s the most special day, I think, of my career,” Anisimova was quoted as saying after the match that lasted for an hour and seven minutes.
Anisimova also stated that it needs immense mental strength for a player to make a comeback after losing the first set in a tie-break.
“I think the worst thing for a tennis player is to lose 7-6 in the first set … It’s really important to just bounce back and give everything I have. It was very easy to do, especially on this court, even though it was extremely exhausting,” she added.
Anisimova is next set to lock horns with France’s Harmony Tan, who earlier defeated the legendary Serena Williams in the first round, in her Round of 16 match. Tan will go into the match after defeating Britain’s Katie Boulter in Round 3.
