HIGHLIGHTS

  • Goffin played the longest match of Wimbledon 2022
  • Goffin will play his quarterfinal match on Wednesday
  • Norrie defeated Tommy Paul in straight sets

Ninth seed Cameron Norrie, on Sunday, July 3, advanced to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon 2022 after beating Tommy Pual of the United States. The 26-year-old Norrie eased past Paul, winning the match 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 on Court 1.

Barring the match against Spain’s Jaume Munar where he had to fight for five sets, Norrie hasn’t had much trouble so far in the grass-court tournament. He has won three games in straight sets and will go into the top eight in pretty decent form.

Both Paul and Norrie produced excellent first-serves where they won 92 and 96 percent of their points respectively. However, Norrie toppled him easily on the second-serve, where the former won 100 percent of his points.

Norrie also won four of his eight break points that he was presented with. The fact that Paul made two double faults didn’t help him by any means.

GOFFIN PROGRESSES

In another match, David Goffin of Belgium played the longest match of the ongoing grass-court tournament at SW19. In a match that spanned four hours and 36 minutes, the 31-year-old Goffin defeated 23rd seed Frances Tiafoe 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 and advanced to the quarterfinals.

Both players tried their hearts out, but in the end, Goffin managed to hold his nerves in the crunch moments of the match. Goffin also broke his opponent’s serve six out of 11 times during the course of the hard-fought encounter.

Goffin is now scheduled to play his quarterfinal match against an undecided opponent on Tuesday, July 5.
