- Alcaraz survived a match point in the third set, but couldn’t hold on eventually
- Jannik Sinner carried on with his impressive form
Spanish tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz, on Sunday, July 3, bowed out of the Wimbledon 2022. The teenager lost to Italy’s Jannik Sinner 1-6, 4-6, 7-6 (10-8), 3-6 at Centre Court.
Alcaraz, who is seeded fifth in the ongoing grass-court tournament at SW19, didn’t get off to the best of starts in the match. He lost the first two sets pretty comprehensively, after which he faced a match point in the tie-break of the third set.
However, Alcaraz somehow managed to stay alive in the match by winning the third set. But yet another time, he lost momentum in the fourth set. Sinner kept dominating the 19-year-old, who looked completely hapless.
Alcaraz was poor to the extent that he couldn’t win even one of his seven break points against Sinner, who came into the match after beating ace-king John Isner in the third round. It goes without saying that Alcaraz was far from his very best throughout the entire tournament.
In contrast, Sinner won four of his 12 break points against the star from Italy. Alcaraz churned out nine aces, but the fact that he made three double faults didn’t help him by any means.
As far as Sinner is concerned, he is next scheduled to lock horns with an undecided opponent on Tuesday, July 5 in the quarter-final of the grass-court championship.
The 20-year-old has been able to keep his composure during crucial phases of matches, but the task for him will get tougher as he goes deep into the tournament.
