French Open finalist Casper Ruud has been knocked out of the 2022 edition of Wimbledon. On Wednesday, June 29, the 23-year-old star lost 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 4-6 to Ugo Humbert of France on Court 2 against all the odds.
After finishing as the runners-up in the clay-court tournament, Ruud started Wimbledon on a grand note. On Monday, June 27, the Norwegian star defeated Spain’s Albert Ramos Vinolas 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (11-9), 6-2 on Court 12.
Against Humbert, Ruud started by winning the first set, but from the second set onwards, the Young Turk completely lost his way.
Humber managed to convert six out of 11 break points and also pulled off 10 aces compared to Ruud’s seven. Ruud was deemed as one of the favourites to win the title, but he failed to make much of a progress.
In another match on Wednesday, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic eased past Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis and qualified for the third round of the grass-court tournament. The No.1 seed looked at relative ease on Centre Court and won 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.
Kokkinakis pulled off 11 aces compared to Djokovic’s one, but the latter held his nerves and never allowed his opponent to get the better of him.
The fact that Kokkinakis made five double faults didn’t help him either. Djokovic also won 13 service games to keep his opposition in check.
Djokovic is the defending champion in the men’s singles at SW19 and is one of the strongest contenders to win the title.
