No.5 seed Maria Sakkari’s campaign in Wimbledon 2022 ended after she lost to Germany’s Maria Tatjana in the third round of the women’s singles draw on Friday, July 1. The Greek star couldn’t put up much of a fight and lost the match 3-6, 5-7 on Court 2.

Sakkari could only win one out of seven break points against the German star, who pretty much looked at ease in her previous match. After the match, the 26-year-old Sakkari admitted that she couldn’t implement her plans effectively and sounded highly dejected.

During the match, Sakkari made as many as 30 unforced errors, which led to her downfall. Sakkari also credited Tatjana for putting her best foot forward. The youngster said that Tatjana stuck to her plans throughout the duration of the game.

“It was a very bad performance from myself. Very disappointing. I mean, credit to Tatjana. She played very good. She played her game. I just messed up with my game plan and everything,” Sakkari was quoted as saying after the match.

Following her victory, Tatjana was pretty satisfied with how she turned up against Sakkari, who was deemed the clear favourite to win the match. “It’s pretty awesome. I think I played a good match from the beginning to the end,” Tatjana said.

Tatjana is next set to lock horns with Latvia’s Jeena Ostapenko in the Round of 16 match on Sunday, July 3. It was Tatjana’s best performance in a Grand Slam after she qualified for the third round of Wimbledon back in 2015.
