Wimbledon 2022: Novak Djokovic on his banter with Nick Kyrgios after win in final – Officially it’s a bromance

World No.3 Novak Djokovic heaped praise on Nick Kyrgios after winning Wimbledon 2022 on Centre Court. On Sunday, July 10, the 35-year-old defeated the Australian star 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).

Djokovic lost the first set, but didn’t look back from there on. The no.1 seed from Serbia also backed the 27-year-old Kyrgios to play many more finals in the future.

“Nick, you will be back, not at Wimbledon, but in the finals. It’s hard to find consolation words after a tough loss like this but, you showed why you deserved to be one of the best in the world, particularly on this surface,” Djokovic was quoted as saying after the match.

“I really respect you a lot. You are a phenomenal tennis player, an athlete and phenomenal, an amazing talent. Everything is starting to come together for you, so I’m sure we are going to see you in the latter stages of Grand Slams,” he stated.

Djokovic also added humour to his conversation, especially after their hilarious pre-match conversation where it was decided that the winner of the final would buy dinner for the runner-up. The veteran said that he now shares a healthy bond with Kyrgios.

“I never thought I’d be going to say so many nice things to you, considering the relationship. Okay, so officially it’s a bromance.

“That’s why he lost. I don’t know if we are going to make it tonight, but this is the start of a wonderful relationship between the two of us, off the court as well,” Djokovic added.

Djokovic, in the meantime, became the fourth player in the Open Era to win Wimbledon four seasons in a row. The other three players are Roger Federer, Bjorn Borg and Pete Sampras. Djokovic won the title in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022.
