Spanish tennis star Roberto Bautista Agut, on Thursday, June 30, stated that he has pulled out of the ongoing Wimbledon edition after testing positive for COVID-19. He, thereby, became the third player in the men’s singles draw to withdraw from the grass-court tournament after being infected with coronavirus.

Earlier, Marin Cilic, the former champion of the US Open and runner-up of the 2017 Wimbledon, and Matteo Berrettini, who went down to Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in the 2021 final at SW19, pulled out of the championship before the start of their campaign.

17th seed Bautista Agut, who is also a former World No.9, was scheduled to lock horns with Colombia’s Daniel Elahi Galan in the second round on Thursday.

“Fortunately, the symptoms are not very serious but I think it is the best decision. I hope to come back soon,” Bautista Agut wrote on Twitter hours before the beginning of the match.

Bautista Agut was stupendous in his first round match against Hungary’s Attila Balazs in the first round. He won the match 6-1, 6-0, 6-3 on Court 9 and gave an account of his stupendous skills. However, luck didn’t quite favour him of late.

As far as Galan is concerned, he will either face Canada’s Denis Shapovalov or USA’s Brandon Nakashima in his third round match. He went into the second round after defeating Germany’s Dominik Koepfer in the first round on Tuesday, June 28. He had to fight hard in the last set, which went into the tie-breaker, but was otherwise clinical.
